After playing all evening up to about midnight, all I can say is that Battlefield is back--and with a vengeance. Being a beta, there are issues of course. I'll just throw out a bullet list of random thoughts I have about the game.
- I don't like the current field of view (can we have fov 90 please??).
- There are issues with being able to bind all keys / functions as well as the mouse wheel.
- Servers are having some stability issues, though things improved as the evening went on. It's a beta--to be expected.
- The recon class tard force is out in mass (read: you can't go on the offense and take an objective with the entire team on the hill sniping into the base).
- Destructible buildings / trees / obstacles = all sorts of awesome... really changes how you approach things.
- The sounds... just wow (environment, ambient affects depending if you're in buildings or whatever, the sound of gunfire and people yelling in the distance--they just nailed all this quite well).
- No health bars--appears it's a regening health game (medics just make you pull back from near death quicker with health packs as best I can tell).
- Spawn on any squad member? Sweet!
- Rush game mode is a lot of fun and how it localizes the battle on the current two objectives.
- Fog of war keeps everyone near the current main objectives else you die like going out of bounds in older BF games--no ninja-ing next objectives.
- Did I mention that the destructible environment is a lot of fun? Think I actually saw an objective taken once by bringing down the entire building it was in, though it took a while to get that building down.
- ATVs with a passenger who can shoot? Count me in! BF2:SF Night Flight all over again.
- Grenade attachment != n00b t00b it seems. You actually have to make your aim count to get kills with this thing (I like this).
I'm sure I have many more things I'd like to say about the game, but I'll hold until later. Need to hook back up with everyone to play together. All in all--I think EA / DICE is going to have a smash hit with this one. _________________

Played for about 3 hours last night.
It was mad fun! Can't wait to play with more DeV as I couldn't seem to join their server with the early issues.
Vehicals are great, 4-wheelers are great, weapons are what you would expect. Yay for choppers!
Only one thing I find odd... I can shoot down a 50ft pine tree with one shot from a sniper rifle.. however I can't kill a man without a headshot or 2 body shots...
Graphics still have some issues to work out. You can only play at low settings and that's with a 5870 in my rig.
Otherwise 9.5 out of 10.. well done, BF is back! |

I enjoyed the game alot when I played yesterday for 45 minutes. Seeing a Cobra in action is crazy realistic and the sounds are great.
I didn't know about the "distroyable" buildings/tree's thing until I hid behind one and had a tank topple it over with me inside. very cool feature and should help with camping.
Unfortanately the game is unplayable for me at the moment becuase although the patch today fixed the browser crashing issue (what prevented me from playing last night longer) today I have a new issue where when I move I can't stop moving in that direction. After trying 3 or 4 USB keyboards in my house and changing up key assignments it's cronic it ssems.
Going to run by work for an old PS2 keyboard to see if that helps but looks like I won't be a part of the BETA until they patch it enough for me to move in game. |

You don't have a joystick / gamepad causing issues, do you? I've read of others mentioning issues with moving a direction without even having pressed any keys, though nothing solid right now as to why. _________________

Ya I learned my lesson about the joystick from my Borderlands issues. I've tried different mice as well and disabling Logitech software. Hope the PS2 solution helps.
After trying many different servers it seems like some do it more then others. Also if I leave VENT off it seems a little better. Still happens but not as much. Might have to stick to in game comms. Also Seeing the issue all over Steam forums so I'm sure they will patch it.
Besides that, super glow annoyances, and the universal lag everyone is getting I like the game alot. |

was in numerous servers - people complaining about it - it all got fixed for them!!!
I am playing through steam!!! |

WOW!! This game is WAY funner when you can move around. although just disabling the joystick controls didn't fit it. I can't really use VENT either it seems or it still happens a little.
Oh well at least the game works now. Thanks all! |

I am not so overjoyed with this game yet. Need to see more, the map they picked leaves much to be desired, another colore besides white please god.
Also I am all for realism but the constant juggling of the screen made me nauseous and gave me a headache they need to tone that down for playablity. CoD has it beat graphics wise from what I have seen, I will hold out on intuitive play/playablity till I see a few more patches. Weapons also need some help, CoD weapons felt much more realistic and not so clunky. _________________ From where the sun now stands

Run VENT as admin? August had a good idea about not using "binds" to talk which I'll try as well.
OTherwise got a solid 3 house in tonight (and now I can move). LOVE THIS GAME!! It has issues but what BETA doesn't. I'm hooked. |

im there with you bush. the juggling doesnt bother me that much but it is a nuisance. it feels to me like i'm trying to run in molasses. I also don't like the fact you can't go prone. I understand the reasoning behind it, still don't like it. The guns in 2142 were better then these. The other thing i'd like is a description. If your not familiar with the guns military designation you have no idea your using a shotgun until you fire it. Last, I think the pistol is way to powerful. have the AK have the pistols punch and it would be more realistic.

Pistols are pretty wicked right now. They do seem like they could be ratcheted back a few notches. I think regarding the rest of the weapons and how they feel--it may just take time getting used to them. When I first played BF2142 coming from BF2, I felt that the weapons were horrid... simply horrid. Felt like kids guns that did nothing but a little *pew* *pew* Airsoft action at each other. In time as I got used to how they handled and understood their ins and outs, though, my opinion of them changed a good bit and I liked them.
It's kindof turning out that way with this. The more I use the various weapons, the more I get a better feel for them and how they work. It just seems at the end of the day that from one game to the next the weapons change and you have to re-acclimate all over to the new feel.
I do still hate that we have no personal indication of health. I can see my team members health, but not my own? Silly. Have no way to know when you're all juiced back up from a med pack after you're hurt other than to just guess and assume.
The FOV issue is still my only real concern with the general "view". The bob I'm mostly used to, but there should be a toggle for it. It hasn't gotten me sick or anything yet, but then again I typically have a rock solid gut when it comes to stuff FPS games throw at me.
I'll probably fall on a side that others don't with this, but I won't really miss prone... at least in the way that DICE has done it in the past. The "dolphin diving" in BF2 turned me off in a huge way to prone since they couldn't seem to get it right. I think they eventually did, and did it right (I don't recall being annoying by it in BF2142), but regardless--I'm OK w/o it. I *hate* games that get campy, and I just feel that prone helps to make FPS games more camper friendly.
At the end of the day, the game has issues that I expect will *mostly* get ironed out. I can hope so, anyway. None of the issues really overshadow the fun I'm having. This game should hopefully fill my FPS niche again since I have no interest in CoD these days. The Rush game mode is a nice new addition to game types and I'm really enjoying it on the map they provided. _________________

On a side note, apparently I'm seeing that there is going to be a "hardcore" mode similar to CoD where bullets are more lethal and the HUD is more minimized? Sweet if so. Rumors have it that there are hardcore servers out already with the beta--just have to find them. _________________

Agreed, I'm getting use to them and you start to know your favorites. Time is always a factor. Not one you like but hey you still need to learn to drive.

So true, I acutally miss the Voss. Its funny, they usually go to much on one weapon and this times the pistol. 2142 it was the shotty. But when a pistol can take me out across the board thats to much.

So true. I never know how long to stay by the packs. At least with ammo I hear a click for each clip loaded.

The bob doesn't really bother me unless i've played for awhile. i understand their need for realism but a contant back and forth at the same degree tends to get annoying. The FOV issue is big. I can get 10+ knife kills in a round easy. If you can't see anything coming besides you your dead. I did find that I can hear the footsteps though. I may need to pay more attention to them but when you get FF on I have a feeling a lot of friendlies will die. Another point, they still have the same problem with knifing as in 2142 it seems like you are always looking down. Maybe just me but that never made sense.

As much as I'd like to have it I can already see tons of snipers all over the palce that you can't see. wouldnt be any fun.

Agreed. Missed 2142 but this fills the need nicely. I just hope they keep a contant supply of maps handy. 5 or 6 maps will kill this game no matter how many game types. LFD2 is a good example of this. Very few maps, running the same route each time gets old real fast. |
